Statistics and Research

The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) supports the Office of Road Safety by collecting and analysing road safety data. The BITRE works with jurisdictions to produce crash outcome data for the official safety performance indicators used to monitor progress against the National Road Safety Strategy 2011–2020 (NRSS) targets.

BITRE maintain a range of road safety statistical information including the Road Deaths Australia Monthly Bulletins, the Heavy Vehicle Quarterly, Road Trauma Australia—Annual Summaries and International Road Safety comparisons annual report.

The Australian Road Deaths Database provides basic details of road transport crash fatalities in Australia, as reported by the police each month to the State and Territory road safety authorities. It is updated on or about the 14th of each month. The data provided are preliminary and subject to revision by jurisdictions.

Road deaths data from the Australian Road Deaths Database are presented in the interactive Monthly road deaths dashboard, which provides counts of road deaths by month, year-to-date, last twelve months and calendar year for the previous ten years. Road deaths are mapped for location (by remoteness area, local government area and Statistical Area Level 4).

The interactive Vision Zero dashboards by Local Government Area or Statistical Area Level 3 presents locations with zero deaths and number of years with zero deaths from 2008.

Other road safety dashboards include the recently released data on Random Breath Testing and Roadside Drug Testing across Australia (where data is available).
