About the Data Hub

The purpose of the National Road Safety Data Hub is to deliver nationally consistent, credible and consumable data and information to support the prevention of fatal and serious injuries on Australian roads.

In realising this purpose, activities undertaken by the Data Hub are guided by four key objectives:

1. Monitor and evaluate progress of the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 (Strategy)

   The Data Hub leads the development of methodologies for, and monitoring of, indicators to measure progress of the Strategy and supporting Action Plans. These include Safety Performance Indicators, Primary Outcome Measures and Action Plan Progress measures.

   The Data Hub evaluates programs delivered through the Office of Road Safety (ORS), to ensure Commonwealth investment has a tangible effect on road safety outcomes. This includes evaluating the effectiveness of treatments applied through the $3 billion Road Safety Program.
    

2. Facilitate transparency, consistency and data sharing

   The Data Hub delivers data and information on road safety through discoverable, accessible and useable web services. Outcomes of activities delivered through ORS are regularly reported, and research, projects and programs undertaken by partners across government, industry, research and community groups are highlighted.

   The Data Hub collaborates with data providers to resolve issues constraining the creation and use of nationally consistent road safety data sets. Regular engagement with stakeholders ensures work programs align with the Data Hub’s purpose and objectives.
    

3. Enable and encourage collaboration among government, industry, research and community stakeholders

   The Data Hub connects partners across government, industry, research and community groups, to avoid duplication, share knowledge and leverage investments to improve road safety outcomes.

   The Data Hub engages with partners in the development of work programs to ensure collaborative opportunities are taken up and partners’ priorities are supported, where appropriate. The Data Hub supports partners’ efforts to build capability by sharing expertise, policies and procedures.
    

4. Undertake and support research

   The Data Hub acts as an honest broker for road safety data and information, through clear guidelines and policies for data use and on-sharing; consistent standards, metadata and cataloguing; and efficient and robust data collection and storage methods. Road safety data is ‘open by default’, with appropriate protections in place to meet privacy obligations.

   The Data Hub undertakes research on road safety issues with a national perspective. Research projects seek to address gaps in existing knowledge and data through the use or development of best practice frameworks.
